Äkta Människor (« les véritables humains ») se déroule dans une Suède contemporaine alternative dans laquelle les robots humanoïdes, ou « hubots », font partie du quotidien. Tandis que certaines personnes adoptent cette nouvelle technologie, d'autres ont peur et redoutent de ce qui pourrait advenir si les humains étaient peu à peu remplacés comme travailleurs, comme compagnons, comme parents voire comme amants.
