Downstairs, Jimmy finally takes an interest in Ivy, while Carson receives an unwelcome reminder of his past. Mrs Hughes sees a chance to help grief-stricken Isobel, and Thomas has the children's nanny in his sights.
Les héritiers de Downton Abbey ayant péri lors du naufrage du Titanic, la famille Crawley se retrouve dans une situation délicate : le domaine est soumis à l’entail, c'est-à-dire qu'il doit intégralement passer à un héritier mâle, le titre de Lord Grantham, le domaine et la fortune de la famille étant indissociables. Les trois filles ne peuvent prétendre ni au titre ni à l'héritage. Matthew Crawley, un lointain cousin, est le nouvel héritier. Il arrive à Downton Abbey où il découvre un style de vie nouveau pour lui, avec des règles très strictes qui régissent la vie entre aristocrates et serviteurs.
